The brant or brent goose is a small goose in the genus Branta. There are three subspecies, all of which winter along temperate-zone sea-coasts and breed on the high-Arctic tundra.
How To Identify
Brants are relatively stocky geese, varying in size depending on the subspecie. Males often display a striking pattern of deep brown plumage contrasting with lighter colored patches on the neck or flanks.
Habitat
Brant geese inhabit coastal areas, salt marshes, estuaries, and shallow bays in high Arctic and subarctic regions during breeding season, migrating to temperate coastal zones in winter.
Behaviour
Brant are highly vocal and gregarious geese that travel in flocks, often in distinctive lines or V-formations, and they are known for their aggressive defense of nesting territories and young.
Native Range
The Brant is native to Asia Europe and Northern America.
Did You Know?
Brant geese are one of the most marine-adapted geese, often feeding in shallow coastal waters and salt marshes rather than freshwater habitats. They can drink saltwater thanks to specialized glands that filter out excess salt.
