This bird is a member of the honeyeater family and is known for its constant and varied vocalizations. It primarily feeds on nectar, fruit, and insects, spending much time gleaning foliage from eucalypts.

How To Identify

Medium-sized for an Australian passerine, it is distinguished by a deep black crest or cap covering its head and neck. The rest of its body plumage tends towards mottled grays and browns.

Habitat

It typically inhabits open and semi-open eucalypt woodlands, gardens, parks, and cleared areas throughout eastern and southeastern Australia.

Behaviour

They are highly social and territorial birds that live in cooperative groups, often seen chasing away other bird species from their feeding and nesting areas with loud vocalizations.

Native Range

Found in a broad arc from Far North Queensland through New South Wales and Victoria to Tasmania and southeastern South Australia, and out to far north-west Queensland, the noisy miner primarily inhabits dry, open eucalypt forests that lack understory shrubs.

Did You Know?

Noisy Miners are remarkably aggressive defenders of their territory and will harass much larger birds, including raptors, to protect their nesting areas. They earned their name from their loud, persistent calls that can be heard across Australian bushland.
