This plump, stocky bird is a ground-dwelling creature that feeds on grasses, seeds, shoots and small invertebrates. It is found in small groups and prefers to hide or run rather than fly. It has been introduced to New Zealand and Fiji.

How To Identify

The Brown Quail is a small to medium ground bird with a generally compact, plump body. Its coloration is characterized by muted earth tones—predominantly various shades of brown, tan, and buff, which provides excellent camouflage against dry grasses.

Habitat

Brown Quail inhabits grasslands, open woodlands, scrublands, and cultivated areas with scattered cover, preferring areas with dense ground vegetation and access to water.

Behaviour

These quail are highly terrestrial and prefer to run through grass rather than fly, flushing only when closely approached, and they often freeze motionless when threatened rather than taking flight.

Native Range

The brown quail is native to mainland Australia Tasmania and Papua New Guinea.
