The double-banded sandgrouse is a species of predominantly terrestrial, or ground-dwelling, bird in the family Pteroclidae. It is found in arid parts of southern Africa.

How To Identify

A medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird with a stocky build and predominantly pale brown or sandy plumage for camouflage. It is easily distinguished by prominent dark bands—hence 'double-banded'—that stripe its wings or flank area.

Habitat

It inhabits semi-arid and arid regions with sparse vegetation, including desert scrubland, grasslands, and open plains across southern Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

Behaviour

Like other sandgrouse, they are highly nomadic and undertake long-distance flights to water sources, often traveling 50+ kilometers daily to drink at dawn and dusk.

Native Range
