The common myna or Indian myna, sometimes spelled mynah, is a bird in the family Sturnidae, native to Asia. An omnivorous open woodland bird with a strong territorial instinct, the common myna has adapted extremely well to urban environments.

How To Identify

Medium-sized with an overall glossy black body, the bird is easily identified by striking bright yellow coloration found on its tail area and wing patches.

Habitat

Common Mynas inhabit open and semi-open areas including grasslands, cultivated fields, gardens, parks, and urban environments across tropical and subtropical regions.

Behaviour

These highly social birds are aggressive and competitive, often monopolizing food sources and nesting sites while actively harassing other bird species through coordinated group attacks.

Did You Know?

Common Mynas are remarkably vocal birds that can mimic human speech and other sounds, and they're known for their bold, almost fearless behavior around humans. They were once released in multiple countries as pest-control agents, but have since become invasive species themselves.
